What Are Terpenes Used For?

Terpenes Offer Enhanced Flavor and Effects

Hello there, and welcome back to our blog! At True Terpenes, we want as many people as possible to understand what our products offer. When the average person hears the word “terpene” they may know a little about the subject, however, most people simply know that terpenes have something to do with plants and the way that they smell and/or taste. This lack of education is understandable considering terpenes are not really something that most people come into contact with in their day to day lives but we feel that we have a responsibility to help spread the good news about terpenes. In today’s post, we are going to go over some of the ways that terpenes are used and why they are used in the hopes that we can provide more people with information that they may not have been able to find easily on their own. Keep reading below to learn more.

How are Terpenes Used?

Terpenes are, quite literally, all around us. These tiny compounds are responsible for the aroma and flavor of a wide range of plants, particularly conifers, and insects. Terpenes often have a strong odor, leading some researchers to believe that they are used by plants to help deter herbivores while simultaneously attracting predators and parasites of herbivores. While terpenes have been used by plants for millions of years, it wasn’t until recently that humans discovered the uses of these compounds. Below, we have listed a few ways that terpenes are used in modern society.

  • Turpentine: One of the earliest known uses of terpenes in a consumer capacity was in the production of turpentine, a fluid that is obtained by distilling the resin of live trees, most commonly pines. Composed of the terpenes alpha-pinene and beta-pinene, with lesser amounts of camphene, dipentene, carene, and terpinolene, turpentine is most often used as a solvent and as a source of materials for organic synthesis, a special branch of chemical synthesis that explores the intentional production of organic compounds through organic reactions.
  • Perfume: In the world of perfume, fragrance is everything. While there are thousands of brands of perfumes to choose from, certain brands are more celebrated than others due to the intense aroma that they are able to provide to the person who purchases the perfume. For this reason, terpenes have become an important part of the perfume industry because of their ability to impart specific powerful scents.
  • Essential Oils: A favorite among alternative health buffs for decades, essential oils have also been shown to contain large amounts of terpenes. They constitute the most widely represented class of hydrocarbons in essential oils and are part of the reason that essential oils are so pungent in regard to the aroma. While not medically proven, essential oil producers claim that the terpenes in essential oils can impart benefits to users including reducing dicomfort, boosts to spirit and energy, and promoting happiness.
  • Flower Enhancement: Terpenes, when added to the flower of certain plant groups, can work to enhance the aroma, flavor, and effects of said flower. Because plants naturally contain certain terpenes, the addition of more terpenes that are similar to or complementary to the terpenes that are already present will enhance the effects of the plant in question. This effect, known commonly as the entourage effect, is still being researched, however, early studies have shown some validity to the ideas behind this effect.
