Frequently Asked Terpene Questions

How Much Do You Know About Terpenes?

Here at True Terpenes, we receive a lot of questions. You see, dear reader, terpenes, while understood by those in the terpene business, are not something that most people have a solid knowledge base of and, for the most part, is as foreign to people as a word from another language. To try and answer as many questions as possible about our product, we have developed a robust FAQ section on our website that lists out some answers to the most common questions that we receive. Even though our FAQ page is designed to answer questions, we felt that it would be a good idea to use today’s post to go over some of the most frequent frequently asked questions that we receive. We hope that by the end of this post every one of our readers comes away with a solid base knowledge of terpenes and feel more confident when deciding which terpenes to purchase.

Q1: What are terpenes used for?

As we mentioned in our previous blog post, terpenes are used in a wide range of applications. Terpenes are one of the main ingredients in a variety of products including turpentine, perfume, essential oils, and biological entities such as plants and certain insects. In some cases, terpenes are used to enhance the aroma and flavors in foods and beverages and can be used to enhance the effects of flowers on certain plants.

Q2: Can terpenes be ingested safely?

The answer to this is both yes and no. On one hand, terpenes have been used in foods and beverages to enhance flavor and aroma, meaning that they can be ingested with the same safety as normal food. On the other hand, terpenes, especially our terpenes, must be diluted before they are added to anything that will be ingested. The terpenes that we provide are highly concentrated, meaning that if they are not diluted before ingestion the intense flavors and aromas can sting the eyes, nose, and mouth. Q3: Are the terpenes you provide derived from cannabis plants?

While many of the terpenes that we provide can be found in cannabis plants we do not derive any of our terpenes from these sources. There are over 3,000 terpenes found in nature and each individual terpene can be found in multiple plant or insect sources. The reason we do not offer cannabis derived terpenes is to help ensure the consistency of our flavors and eliminate any regulatory red tape surrounding the shipping of cannabis related products to non-legal states.

Q4: Are your terpenes organic?

Yes, all terpenes produced by True Terpenes are naturally derived and organic, however, our products are not technically USDA Certified Organic. In order for a product to receive USDA Organic certification, a product must be considered “agricultural”, meaning that the product must be something that a person can grow and eat. When our terpenes are extracted from plants, the cease to be considered as an “agricultural” product and, as a result, cannot be classified as USDA Certified Organic. Despite this, all of the base sources we use to gather our terpenes are organic compliant and are FDA approved as a natural product. In addition to being derived from natural, organic sources, all of our terpenes are Non-GMO and are never distilled from genetically modified organisms or their derivatives.

Q5: Do your terpenes contain solvents?

This is another question that receives a yes/no answer. While our terpenes do not contain added solvents, terpenes, by their very nature, an act as solvents to many other substances. Through exposure to heat, UV rays, and oxygen terpenes can, over time, degrade and be found to contain trace amounts of solvents such as acetone. Even when these solvents are found, however, they are such trace amounts they should not be much of a concern to the average consumer.
